What is kirtan anyway?
Kirtan is the form of singing ancient sanskrit mantra chants in a group, a practice which goes back over 500 years in India. In it’s heartfelt expression, it opens the heart and stills the mind, like a singing meditation which can induce states of profound joy and bliss. It is a form of bhakti-yoga known as the yoga of devotion. The singing is accompanied by musical instruments such as guitar, harmonium, shakers, hand clapping and percussion. You will not be able to resist the urge to join in!
“Kirtan is for all people. There are no experts, no beginners. The practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Kirtan allows us to enter into a mystery world—a world where all the logic of our minds, all the condition and learning are left outside. And in this mystery, we create a temple inside of our hearts, a place of refuge, a place of love, a place of just being.” —Jai Uttal
